In Gnostictiscm (Second Century religious movement), the spiritual world, is a distinct hierachy of spiritual levels. The word Aeon, Greek for "Age", signifies 'eternity' in divine power, and was used to define the orders of spirits which emanated from the divine Entity. The primal Aeon, which emanated directly frm this Entity is of the highest divinity. Successive Aeons, subordinate to the the first Aeon, are progressively diminished in spiritual perfection. It was believed that the material world was created from the imperfection of a remote Aeon. In Christianity, Christ is the primal Aeon. He serves as the redeemer of the material world.
