Dali, is the first village in which the main characters visit in Final Fantasy IX. There are two possible sources to which the name of the village was derived. The first source, which is the unlikelier one, is that of the Spanish painter and writer Salvador Dalí (1904-1989). He was a follower of the Surrealist movement and his belief in the movement was often reflected in his writings and art.

The second source is that of the city of Ta-li that is located in the province of Yunnan in China. In the Mandarin pin-yin, Ta-li is spelt as Dali. The words 'Ta-Li' mean 'to rule with orders'. In 937 AD, Duan Siping founded the Kingdom of Dali which lasted until 1253 when it was conquered by the Mongolian ruler Kublai Khan.
