The daughter of Njord and the sister of Frey who was one of Norse mythology's most favoured gods. Friday is named after her. She was the most propitious of all goddesses - the goddess of love and beauty. In some versions of Norse mythology, she was also the wife of Odin.

She held residence in the hall Sessrumnir in Folkvang, ("Field of Folk") that lay in Asgard. It was in her palace that she hosted half of the fallen warriors who died in war. Odin held claim to the other half of the fallen warriors who would be gathered in the hall of Valhalla (see Odin).
