In Xenogears, the character General Maitreya was but a semi-important character. He was a Sand Pirate who fought alongside Fei, and was later killed by Vanderkaum.

In Buddhism however, Maitreya is a bodhisattva and the Buddha-yet-to-come. The name "Maitreya" is derived from the Sanskrit word "Maitri", which means "friendliness".
