Arachne was a skilled weaver; claims that her work was better than Minerva's caused a challenge from the goddess herself. After both finished weaving, Minerva destroyed Arachne's loom and filled her with guilt, causing Arachne to hang herself. Out of pity, Minerva turned Arachne into the spider.
